The Netherlands defender is helping Manchester United’s defence keep clean sheets

Tyrell Malacia, a Manchester United defender, has sent a message of encouragement to his teammates as Erik ten Hag’s rebuilding project continues. Since replacing Luke Shaw at half-time against Brentford last month, the Dutchman has started every game. He stopped the onslaught of goals in United’s 4-0 defeat to the Bees and has since recorded three more clean sheets. Malacia has wowed fans since his £13 million summer move from Feyenoord, when he became United manager Ten Hag’s first signing. His performance against Mo Salah in the historic 2-1 win over Liverpool, as well as his performance against Gabriel Martinelli in the 3-1 victory over table-toppers Arsenal, earned him a lot of praise. Tyrell Malacia has proven Louis van Gaal wrong about Manchester United. He is now arguably one of the first names on the teamsheet and will almost certainly start the Manchester derby against Manchester City on October 2. Following the international break, Malacia will look to earn his sixth cap for the Netherlands. The 23-year-old is expected to be named to Louis van Gaal’s World Cup squad, as the Netherlands return to the tournament after missing out on Russia 2018. In the meantime, Malacia has encouraged her teammates to keep fighting. “No matter how difficult the challenge, always stay positive and believe in yourself,” he wrote on Instagram. It hints at how he will approach the season for United, as well as his rivalry with Luke Shaw for a starting spot.

The Netherlands’ remaining Nations League matches are against Poland and Belgium, with a win over the former ensuring their place in next summer’s finals.
