A back four is not the answer, says former Scotland defender Mark Wilson.

When Andy Robertson returns from injury, Mark Wilson believes Steve Clarke will be forced to make a “tough decision.” The Scotland captain was absent from last night’s 3-0 Nations League victory over Ukraine at Hampden Park. Clarke’s team produced one of their best performances in years to earn an important win and move ahead of the Ukrainians at the top of the group. Clarke previously used a back five formation with two world-class players in Robertson and Kieran Tierney. Tierney has been deployed at left center-back, with Robertson at left wing back. In Liverpool star Robertson’s absence last night, Clarke reverted to a back four, which worked admirably as Scotland put in a fantastic performance. If Clarke sticks with a back four, former Scotland cap Wilson admits the former Kilmarnock manager faces a selection quandary. “It will be an interesting debate when Andy Robertson returns,” Wilson told Clyde SuperScoreboard, “but that’s what international football is about – serious competition.” However, if this is the case, the manager must make difficult decisions. Steve Clarke must have anticipated this day and attempted to change the shape to accommodate both Tierney and Robertson.” “I thought that was appropriate when you have two outstanding players, and it worked.” But now he’s seen something that worked and looked good.” One significant advantage of switching to a back four was that it allowed Scott McTominay to play in his natural midfield role. Wilson expects Manchester United’s star, 25, to continue in the center of the park against Ireland on Saturday. “He was fantastic,” Wilson added. “The shape change allowed players to fill positions that were more natural to them.” The midfield is a crucial position in international football. Normally, your best players are stacked in there, and if a guy at Manchester United plays like he did last night, you’d expect him to play there again on Saturday. Gordon Dalziel, another pundit, agreed with Wilson and suggested that Clarke learned a “lesson” against Ukraine. “That is McTominay’s natural position,” he explained. “I don’t see him returning to the center of defense.” Clarke learned a valuable lesson last night, in my opinion. He has to stick with him next to McGregor.”

The world’s most expensive footballer takes a stand against gambling

After refusing to be photographed with the French national team, footballer Kylian Mbappe has brought renewed attention to the social role of sports stars. According to reports, the 23-year-old striker for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has stated that he will not participate in a photoshoot scheduled for Tuesday with the World Champions until image rights agreements are “modified.” According to the French newspaper Le Parisien, the footballer sees online betting as a danger to his younger fans and is frustrated with being associated with obesity-inducing fast food. Because Mbappe is widely regarded as one of the best and most marketable players in the world, the financial implications were enormous, especially given that France’s title defense in Qatar is only two months away. So it came as no surprise when a deal was reached on Tuesday. Following the French Football Federation’s announcement that it would review its decision on image rights, the striker changed his stance and took part in the shoot. Mbappe is not the first sports star to enter politics, and he will not be the last. During a press conference for the UEFA Euro 2020 in June 2021, Cristiano Ronaldo pushed two Coca-Cola bottles from his table, instead asking for “water.” The Portuguese captain, a proponent of healthy eating, was visibly distressed when he noticed the black fizzy drinks in front of him, quickly sweeping them out of the camera frame. Ronaldo’s actions sparked an internet frenzy, with memes, parody videos, and (occasionally) witty jokes saturating social media. Coca-Cola’s share price fell 1.6% and its market value fell from €241 to €237 billion – a €4 billion drop – but this was a temporary setback for the soft drinks giant, which quickly recovered. Coca-Cola, a cup sponsor, stated that “everyone is entitled to their drink preferences” based on “different tastes and needs.” Just one day after Ronaldo’s departure, French footballer Paul Pogba hid a bottle of Heineken beer before a press conference. The Juventus player, a devout Muslim, hid the bottle of non-alcoholic Heineken 0.0 after being named man of the match in a 1-0 victory over Germany. Former Newcastle United player Papiss Cisse also took a stand when he played for the club, protesting against its pay-day loan sponsor due to his religious beliefs. ‘Black strength’ However, this is not a new phenomenon. Muhammad Ali, long before the age of social media, smashed his way to becoming the world heavyweight boxing champion in 1964, famously declaring, “I am the greatest.” The boxer and activist became a Muslim and renounced his birth name Cassius Clay as a “slave name,” becoming one of the most famous and recognizable athletes of his time. The United States was embroiled in the devastating Vietnam War at the time. Ali was drafted but refused to join the military. He made a decision based on his religious beliefs and his strong ethical opposition to the war. The conscientious objector was promptly arrested and later convicted of draft evasion, cementing his place as a counterculture icon of the 1960s. Authorities stripped Ali of his title and suspended his fighting license. For three years, he did not fight. It is one of the most iconic images in sporting history: two black American athletes on top of a medal platform, fists clenched. They are Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who finished first and third in the 200m sprint at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. The pair accepted their medals and stood on the platform for the national anthem after winning the race. Carlos and Smith both gave a “Black Power salute” as the Star Spangled Banner began. Despite Smith breaking the men’s World Record, they were booed as they exited the platform. During the civil rights movement in the United States, Carlos and Smith were protesting the treatment of black Americans and other minorities. Both athletes were kicked out of the games, had their medals taken away, and were widely chastised for their actions, but their legacy lives on today. Politics on and off the field Political stunts by athletes are still contentious. Idrissa Gueye missed a match for PSG in May after players were asked to wear shirts with rainbow numbers to show their support for LGBT+ equality and inclusion. According to his former manager, Mauricio Pochettino, Gueye missed the game due to “personal reasons.” He also missed the corresponding match the previous season. French President Emmanuel Macron slammed the Senegalese player’s actions on Twitter “Homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia strike, discriminate against, and reject. Everyone has the right to be themselves, to love and to be loved.” In 2021, Ivory Coast footballer Wilfried Zaha declared that he would no longer take a knee, becoming one of the first English Premier League players to do so. Instead, the Crystal Palace striker has pledged to “stand tall” when he returns from injury, believing that protesting is no longer enough. “I think the meaning behind it all is becoming something we just do now, “He stated. “That is insufficient. “I’m not taking the knee.” Zaha, who claims his mother has made him donate 10% of his earnings to charity since he was 16, also claims that racism against black players continues online, implying that the protests were ineffective. “We’re trying to say we’re equal, but it’s not working,” he explained. “Don’t ask me about it unless something has changed.” I don’t want to hear about it unless there is going to be action.”

Son Heung-min inspires tennis star Raducanu

EMMA RADUCANU was delighted to see Spurs’ Son Heung-min score a hat-trick against Leicester on Saturday. Emma Raducanu is influenced by Son Heung-min. You have the option to unsubscribe at any time. More information After arriving in South Korea ahead of her latest WTA Tour event, Emma Raducanu praised Tottenham hero Son Heung-min. A difficult year for the teen star was exacerbated this month at Flushing Meadows, when her defense of the US Open title she won sensationally in 2021 fell at the first hurdle. She lost in the second round of the Slovenia Open last week, but she has the chance to rediscover her form on Wednesday when she faces Moyuka Uchijima in the first round of the Korea Open. The Japanese player has reached a career high ranking of 130th in the world. And Raducanu will be buoyed by her recent football results, if not her tennis results. Earlier this year, the 19-year-old revealed she was a Tottenham Hotspur fan, and the club beat Leicester City 6-2 on Saturday to maintain their early-season lead at the top of the Premier League. Son, who came off the bench, was the star of the show, scoring a stunning late hat-trick. The striker, like Raducanu, has had a difficult time of late, failing to score in his team’s first eight games of the season before breaking his duck spectacularly. NEWS FLASH: Roger Federer’s retirement is a “relief,” according to his coach, who details the “extreme strain” the Swiss has been under. Raducanu was defeated in the US Open by Alize Cornet. (GETTY) Indeed, the British No. 1 regards the forward as an inspiration to her and his South Korean teammates: “I really resonate with him, and I think what he’s doing for sport and football in Asia, particularly in Korea, is massive,” she said, according to tennis365. “I believe there will be a lot more future athletes coming from this side of the world.” And, like Son and Spurs, Raducanu, whose ranking fell from 11 to 77 after the US Open, is eager to get her hands on some silverware soon. As of now, her remarkable victory in New York is her only tournament victory. DON’T FORGET: Andy Murray admits to getting ‘a little emotional’ during the Davis Cup match, but then teases a GB comeback. Roger Federer will decide whether to compete in the Laver Cup at the “last minute” due to fitness concerns. Andy Murray receives an apology from a BBC interviewer after a Brit corrects him following his Davis Cup victory. Against Leicester, Son scored his first Premier League goals of the season. (GETTY)When asked about her desire to win in Korea, she stated, “Of course, I would love to win a title, and to be honest, I don’t think it matters at what level.” I believe that simply playing a large number of matches will benefit me greatly.” In Seoul, the British star is seeded sixth and is on the same side of the draw as favourite Jelena Ostapenko. The two could face off in the semi-finals. Articles Related to Katie Swan, who offers support, calms Emma Raducanu’s fears. The Netherlands defender is helping Manchester United’s defence keep clean sheets

Tyrell Malacia, a Manchester United defender, has sent a message of encouragement to his teammates as Erik ten Hag’s rebuilding project continues. Since replacing Luke Shaw at half-time against Brentford last month, the Dutchman has started every game. He stopped the onslaught of goals in United’s 4-0 defeat to the Bees and has since recorded three more clean sheets. Malacia has wowed fans since his £13 million summer move from Feyenoord, when he became United manager Ten Hag’s first signing. His performance against Mo Salah in the historic 2-1 win over Liverpool, as well as his performance against Gabriel Martinelli in the 3-1 victory over table-toppers Arsenal, earned him a lot of praise. Tyrell Malacia has proven Louis van Gaal wrong about Manchester United. He is now arguably one of the first names on the teamsheet and will almost certainly start the Manchester derby against Manchester City on October 2. Following the international break, Malacia will look to earn his sixth cap for the Netherlands. The 23-year-old is expected to be named to Louis van Gaal’s World Cup squad, as the Netherlands return to the tournament after missing out on Russia 2018. In the meantime, Malacia has encouraged her teammates to keep fighting. “No matter how difficult the challenge, always stay positive and believe in yourself,” he wrote on Instagram. It hints at how he will approach the season for United, as well as his rivalry with Luke Shaw for a starting spot.

The Netherlands’ remaining Nations League matches are against Poland and Belgium, with a win over the former ensuring their place in next summer’s finals. READ NEXT: Manchester United’s official website Manchester United has received a double injury boost. Donny van de Beek has the potential to prove Erik ten Hag correct. Zidane Iqbal was left out of the Iraq squad. United may soon have two new first-team players.

What did Graham Potter learn from Chelsea’s friendly win over Brighton?

GRAHAM POTTER was undoubtedly inspired by Chelsea’s friendly victory over Brighton. Chelsea fans react to Thomas Tuchel’s dismissal. Invalid We use your sign-up to deliver content in ways you’ve agreed to and to better understand you. Based on our understanding, this may include advertisements from us and third parties. You have the option to unsubscribe at any time. More information Chelsea manager Graham Potter will undoubtedly have learned valuable lessons from Saturday’s behind-closed-doors friendly with Brighton. With only one competitive match under his belt as Blues manager, 90 minutes against a top-flight team will have provided him with the opportunity to problem-solve following a 1-1 draw with RB Salzburg in the Champions League. Express Sport takes you through four dilemmas that Potter was able to sink his teeth into based on the players in action… Is Chukwuemeka prepared? Carney Chukwuemaka has yet to make a senior appearance for Chelsea since joining from Aston Villa in a £20 million deal last summer. The teenager has a solid reputation and was instrumental in England’s Under-19s winning the European Championships in July. Any lingering doubts about his readiness for greater responsibility were allayed on Saturday, when he scored both of the Blues’ goals in a 2-1 win over Brighton. Chukwuemeka already has Premier League experience from his time at Villa, and he could get more in the coming weeks if Potter is impressed. NEWS FLASH: Arthur Melo makes two Liverpool requests to Jurgen Klopp as his signing progresses. Graham Potter played a friendly against his former club Brighton on Saturday. Is Gallagher deserving of a prominent role? One of the major questions raised by supporters this season has been how Conor Gallagher fits into this Chelsea team. He shone on loan at Crystal Palace last season, but he is one of eight first-team players vying for a spot in central midfield, alongside Chukwuemeka and deadline-day signing Denis Zakaria. Potter, 22, has an advantage in that he played with three centre-mids in his first game against RB Salzburg, giving him a better chance of breaking into the starting lineup. He had to settle for a spot on the bench for the new manager’s first game, but he was given a valuable opportunity to impress against Brighton, as none of the midweek starters were involved. DON’T FORGET Man United are in trouble with five players, including Harry Maguire. Erik ten Hag, according to Agbonlahor, has frozen out two Manchester United players. Tottenham star slammed in damning assessment following Conte’s support Who starts at the top? Armando Broja, another highly rated Chelsea prospect, has been denied playing time since returning from a productive loan spell with Southampton in 2021/22. Axed manager Thomas Tuchel is said to have blocked West Ham from making a big-money move for the striker because he believes he can make it at Stamford Bridge. However, established stars like Kai Havertz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are vying for minutes in the middle. Potter took a step toward resolving the quandary by giving Broja valuable game time against the Seagulls, and seeing the prospect up close will have helped him assess where he fits in the pecking order. Armando Broja played against Brighton in an attempt to gain more playing time. Can Zakaria pull it off? Like Chukwuemeka, deadline day signing Zakaria is yet to be given a chance in the Chelsea first team. The Switzerland international arrived at Stamford Bridge on loan from Juventus with co-owner Todd Boehly keen to add more depth in midfield. Zakaria’s appearance against the Seagulls will have given Potter an idea of whether he is ready for the Premier League and how he compares to rival defensive midfield options such as Jorginho and N’Golo Kante. It is unclear whether he will be used the next time the Blues play, against Crystal Palace on October 1. Articles Related to Due to rail disruptions, Arsenal vs. Tottenham may be postponed. During the international break, Graham Potter can experiment with different tactics. Former Arsenal manager David Dein apologizes to Ashley Cole for his departure.

Reo Hatate set to make Japan debut against USA and Ecuador

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate has been given the chance to impress for Japan ahead of the World Cup in Qatar later this year. The Japanese squad for this month’s international break was announced in the early hours of this morning, as they prepare to play friendlies against the United States and Ecuador. According to dependable journalist Dan Orlowitz, Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, and Reo Hatate were all named to the 30-man squad for the two games at the end of September. Squad: GK Kawashima, Gonda, Schmidt, TaniDF Nagatomo, H. Sakai, Tanguchi, Yamane, Y. Nakayama, Tomoyasu, H. Ito, SekoMF/FW: Haraguchi, Shibasaki, W. Endo, J. Ito, Minamino, Furuhashi, Morita, Kamada, Soma, Mitoma, D. Mae Dan Orlowitz (@aishiterutokyo) — x 15 September 2022 The matches against the United States and Ecuador could be crucial for all three Celtic players, with the Qatar 2022 World Cup taking place in the winter of this year. These friendly matches are one of the last chances for Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu to scout potential World Cup squad members, with the selection deadline in November fast approaching. From the outside looking in, it appears that both Kyogo and Daizen Maeda are almost certain to be named to the tournament’s 26-man squad after becoming regulars. However, this game period will provide an excellent opportunity for Reo Hatate to demonstrate his worth ahead of the prestigious competition. The midfielder has had a fantastic start to the season and is clearly catching the attention of those in charge in his homeland, who are eager to see him in action later this month. Hatate earned his first Japan cap in March during a World Cup qualifier against Vietnam. But he only had 45 minutes to make an impression before being replaced. Image courtesy of Richard Callis/Eurasia Sports Images/Getty Images. Hatate certainly deserves a chance to show why he should be in the Japanese squad heading to Qatar in November after performing well at the highest level against the likes of Real Madrid, alongside Kyogo and Maeda. Of course, in facing the United States, the Celtic trio may be joined by a fellow Hoops teammate who will be looking to make his own mark ahead of the World Cup. Carter, Cameron- Vickers has also been named to his country’s squad and will be hoping for strong performances to cement his place in the lineup. Thankfully, we won’t have to see all four Celtic players travel too far across the globe, with the friendly matches taking place in Germany. So, we wish our Bhoys the best of luck, and we hope they can make a strong enough impression to earn a spot in the Qatar 2022 World Cup alongside players like Josip Juranovic. In other news, Real Madrid waited too long but ended up doing Celtic a huge favor. Do you have anything to say about this article?

The Everton players who could captain the club in the absence of Coleman and Pickford

Despite the fact that they are still looking for their first Premier League victory of the 2022-23 season, there is optimism at Goodison Park. Everton fans are optimistic about the rest of the season. With last weekend’s match against Arsenal postponed due to the passing of the Queen, Frank Lampard was given extra time with his squad at Finch Farm to continue to make his mark. Everton now prepares to host West Ham United at Goodison Park on Sunday. Lampard, on the other hand, will be without Jordan Pickford against the Hammers. The No. 1 goalkeeper for England has a thigh injury and will be out until after the international break. Not only will Everton be missing a key player, but they will also be without their captain for the remainder of the season. This season, Seamus Coleman has yet to make an appearance. He had surgery in the summer and missed the first two games. Despite being back to full fitness, the Toffees’ longest-serving player has been unable to unseat Nathan Patterson at right-back. As a result, Lampard will have to name a new captain to face David Moyes’ side. And, after being short on leaders last season, the Everton manager is now overflowing with them. Adding such attributes was critical during the transfer window. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the players from whom Lampard could choose. Tarkowski, James Everton’s interest in the centre-back was initially met with widespread approval. Tarkowski had just been a member of the Burnley team that was relegated from the Premier League. However, during his four seasons in the Premier League, the ex-Brentford defender demonstrated his quality on numerous occasions, earning him two England caps. Tarkowski was vice-captain at Turf Moor and a strong voice in the dressing room alongside skipper Ben Mee. Those qualities have been evident since his arrival at Goodison Park. Indeed, Lampard praised Tarkowski’s leadership qualities as soon as he signed for Everton. He’s a strong contender for the position. Conor Coady’s Conor Coady is an Everton defender. Photographer: Stu Forster/Getty Images When Lampard was Chelsea manager, it was Coady’s yelping and sobbing for Wolves that first drew his attention. The centre-back left an indelible mark on Lampard in a game played behind closed doors during the Covid-19 pandemic. Everton signed Coady on a season-long loan from Wolves for reasons other than his outspokenness on the pitch. He’s an excellent top-flight defender. However, it was a feature of Coady’s game that would have persuaded Lampard. That has been clear in his first five games for the Toffees. He’s done an excellent job of directing the defense. The one stipulation for Coady being given the armband is that he is a loan player. The fact that the England international is only on loan at Goodison Park has had no effect on his dedication. Not at all. And Coady could be planning to make the switch permanent next summer. It could, however, influence Lampard’s decision. Gana Gueye, Idrissa Idrissa Gana Gueye is an Everton midfielder. Photograph by Michael Regan/Getty Images The midfielder could be back at Everton in less than two weeks. Nonetheless, given that he previously spent three years at Goodison Park, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s elite defensive midfielders and earning a move to PSG, handing Gueye this armband isn’t out of the question. His appearance off the bench in the Merseyside derby was outstanding. Gueye’s performance was impressive given his lack of playing time. After all, the Senegal international has been rubbing shoulders with Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and others in recent seasons. With two Ligue 1 titles, an AFCON title, and a Champions League runners-up medal under his belt, no player in the squad would argue with the decision if Gueye was given the job. Gueye is likely to start against West Ham after having had more time to improve his fitness levels following last weekend’s postponement. Iwobi, Alex Alex Iwobi of Everton. Photograph by Laurence Griffiths/Getty Images When you think of the archetypal captain, you think of someone who is loud and not afraid to read the riot act to his team members if necessary. However, some skippers do not fall into that category. Leaders can sometimes set an example not by how much noise they make, but by how well they perform. No one has surpassed Iwobi since Lampard took over as manager at Goodison Park. He was once a boo boy among supporters, but his remarkable career turnaround has turned him into a fan favorite. Iwobi has thrived in every position he’s been asked to fill under Lampard. His dedication, energy, and zeal have been unwavering. Even his most ardent detractors no longer point the finger at him. That is why the possibility of a Nigerian international taking over the captaincy should not be ruled out.

Erling Haaland insists he had the last laugh against his former team-mates.

The Norwegian striker scored once more as Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City beat Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Erling Haaland insists his former teammates did not stop him after scoring the winner in Manchester City’s 2-1 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund at the Etihad on Wednesday evening.

City made it two wins out of two in their Champions League group, beating the German giants after coming from behind.

City comes in late, but they get the three points.

The first half was characterized by few chances, with Dortmund keeping their illustrious hosts at bay. The second half was devoid of action until Jude Bellingham opened the scoring for Edin Terzi’s men in the 56th minute, which silenced the home crowd.

City’s unbeaten start to the season appeared to be over until John Stones leveled the score in the 80th minute, before Haaland scored the winner for Guardiola’s men four minutes later.

However, it was not all plain sailing for Haaland, who was kept quiet in the game before scoring the game-winning goal.

Who will stand in Haaland’s way?

Despite this, the Norwegian striker insists that he had the last laugh on his former teammates, despite admitting that they followed him throughout the game.

When asked about the treatment he received from his ex-teammates, Haaland stated, “They didn’t stop me.”

I was successful. They performed admirably. They were excellent.

“I knew I’d be watched the entire game because Edin [Dortmund boss Terzic] knows me so well.” Dortmund were outstanding today. “What matters is that you get three points,” he added.

Since joining City from Dortmund in the summer, Haaland has scored 13 goals in just eight games. The 22-year-old already has ten goals in the Premier League this season and will get another chance to add to his tally when Guardiola’s men travel to Wolves on Saturday.
